Yubico Begins Offering Improved Yubikey Bio With Room for More Passkeys – Computer – News

A month ago I bought my YubiKey from an online store, assuming I could store 64 keys on them as stated in the specifications, which is roughly how many I would need. When I received them at home, I saw from a number of packaging labels that they were from an early 2023 batch, but I didn’t know any better at the time and continued installing. After creating +-15 keys, I suddenly saw somewhere that there was a limit of 32 keys. I did some more research and on https://support.yubico.co…-register-my-YubiKey-with It’s over. You say:

Firmware for YubiKey 5 5.7+ Series
OATH-TOTP – The YubiKey 5’s OATH implementation can accommodate up to 64 OATH-TOTP credentials (AKA Authentication Tokens).

YubiKeys 5 Series with Firmware 5.0-5.6
OATH-TOTP – The YubiKey 5’s OATH implementation can accommodate up to 32 OATH-TOTP credentials (AKA Authentication Tokens).

So I already have one with older firmware…

I contacted the online store to ask if they would like to send me 2 of the new series, then I could convert them right away and not have to temporarily switch back to another solution. This is not possible, because they only have an old set with the old firmware… Now I have no choice but to order them directly from Yubico until I am sure I get the new firmware, then transfer the 15 accounts and then return the 2 with the old firmware which I thankfully got a refund for.

Technically it can hold 64 keys, but the firmware can’t be updated. I understand why, because you can actually write your own firmware that can do something with the stored keys, but now you can count on the fact that every committed user no longer wants products from the old batch and so these products are out of circulation and have to be taken. Or maybe they can go back to Yubico who can put a new firmware on it….

So when you receive it, pay attention to what firmware you have and do not open the package if you have an old batch and 32 keys are not enough.

Anyway, what a hassle and time waster, now I can visit those sites again to generate new passwords. Otherwise it’s a great product with great software.
